The method

Simple math.
Nothing hidden.

How the discount is calculated

Multiply the original price by the discount rate to find your savings. Subtract those savings from the original price. If you add sales tax, it is applied to the discounted price.

Savings = Original price × (Discount ÷ 100)

Sale price = Original price − Savings

Final price = Sale price + Tax

A quick example

A $120 item at 25% off saves you $30, making the sale price $90. With 8% sales tax, tax is $7.20 and the final price is $97.20.

Rounding and assumptions

The original price is rounded to the selected currency’s usual minor unit first. Savings, sale price, tax, and total are then rounded at each step so the visible breakdown adds up exactly. Actual checkout rules can vary by seller and jurisdiction.
